IRS Date Format for Electronic Filing

icon-aca-soft

When preparing files for the IRS FIRE system, dates must follow a strict format. If you have a date field in Excel formatted as MM/DD/YY or MM/DD/YYYY, the software will automatically convert it into the IRS-required format:

YYYYMMDD

This is an 8-digit date field with no spaces, dashes, or slashes. It’s exactly how the IRS requires dates to be submitted electronically.

When you generate a print or preview copy of your forms, the software will reformat the date back into a human-readable format:

MM/DD/YY

This ensures that Copy B sent to recipients is easy to read, while the IRS receives the date in the correct electronic format.
