The IRS Is Retiring the FIRE System — Meet IRIS, the Future of E-Filing

Beginning with Tax Year 2026 (filings due in 2027), the IRS will officially retire the FIRE System and require all information return filings to be submitted through a new electronic platform called IRIS (Information Returns Intake System).
At 1099IRIS, we’re here to make this transition simple, secure, and stress-free — so you can stay focused on your business, not on decoding new IRS technology.
The IRS is encouraging businesses to file using a 3rd party service. The IRS can rely on the accuracy of data when submitted through a third party approved vendor thus streamlining their workflow process.
Your options for filing begin with one of two decisions.
Do you wish to file using a 3rd party? Step 1
Do you wish to file on your own? Steps 2-4
Below is the summarized information to help you make that decision.

1. The Simplest Path: Let 1099IRIS File for You

We’ve taken care of the hard part. 1099IRIS is fully authorized by the IRS to transmit files through the IRIS system using our secure Outsource Filing Service.
✅ No new TCC application
✅ No testing or software setup
✅ No dealing with IRS technical hurdles
Simply upload your files, and we’ll handle the rest — from validation to transmission and confirmation.

2. Apply for a New IRIS TCC

To file through IRIS, every organization must obtain a new Transmitter Control Code (TCC) — your old FIRE TCC will no longer apply.

  • The official IRS instructions are available here: IRS Publication 5903 (PDF).
  • Approval can take up to 45 days, so we recommend applying early to avoid delays.

💡 Tip: If you’d prefer to skip the application process altogether, 1099IRIS can handle transmissions on your behalf.

3. Choose How You’ll File

IRIS offers two options for electronic filing:

  • Free IRS IRIS Portal — Best for smaller filers (up to 250 records per submission).
  • A2A (Application-to-Application) Channel — Designed for high-volume or automated submissions.

4. Understanding the A2A Option

The A2A Channel provides direct integration for bulk filing — but it’s complex. It requires:

  • Specialized third-party or custom-built software capable of communicating through the A2A interface,
  • A valid digital security certificate (PFX file) issued by an approved Certificate Authority to authenticate transmissions, and
  • Successful IRS testing using official test scenarios before live submissions are permitted.

Because of the specialized setup and security requirements, 1099IRIS only offers outsourcing as an option. Our system has already met all IRS certification, testing, and security requirements, including the use of an active IRS-approved certificate.

By filing through 1099IRIS, you gain all the benefits of A2A integration—speed, compliance, and reliability—without the cost, time, or complexity of building your own certified A2A infrastructure.
