Is the IRS FIRE System going away?

icon-aca-soft

Yes. The IRS FIRE System (Filing Information Returns Electronically) will gradually be phased out and replaced by the IRS IRIS System (Information Returns Intake System). This change is part of the IRS modernization effort to improve electronic filing for businesses and tax professionals.

IRS FIRE System: Current Role
  • Launched in the 1980s as the primary electronic filing platform for Forms 1099, 1042-S, and W-2G.

  • Widely used by businesses and tax professionals for decades.

  • As of 2025, the FIRE System remains operational but is considered a legacy system.

IRS IRIS System: The New Platform
  • Introduced in 2023 to modernize filing of information returns.

  • Offers a more user-friendly, secure, and efficient experience.

  • Designed especially for smaller businesses and filers who previously needed third-party software to access FIRE.

What This Transition Means

The IRS will shift from the FIRE System to the IRIS platform over time. Filers should prepare for a gradual move and take advantage of IRIS features to stay compliant with IRS modernization efforts.
