What if I Transmitted the Same 1099 Record Twice?

icon-aca-soft

Accidentally transmitting the same 1099 record more than once can cause the IRS to think a recipient was overpaid. Think of each 1099 record as a “mailbox” containing a payment amount. If you e-file the same recipient and the same $100 twice, the IRS will treat it as two mailboxes, each with $100, for a total of $200.

How to Correct a Duplicate 1099 Filing

The IRS allows you to fix this with a 1-step correction:

  • File a correction with the payment amount changed to $0.

  • This will void one of the duplicate records, leaving only the correct one in place.

Example:

  • If you e-filed a $100 payment three times by mistake, the IRS would think the recipient was paid $300.

  • You would need to file two 1-step corrections of $0, leaving only one valid $100 record.

Another Solution

If your file has not yet been released, you have another option:

  • When you upload data to the IRS and it shows as “Good, Not Released”, you have 10 days before it is finalized.

  • During this period, call the IRS at 866-455-7438 (option 3, then option 3 again) and request deletion of the file.
