Is the ACA Being Repealed?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010, is still in effect. The individual mandate requires most consumers and their dependents to have health insurance or pay a penalty.

Current Status of the ACA

As of 2024, the ACA is stronger than ever.

  • More than 40 million Americans have health coverage through ACA programs.

  • Enrollment has grown by 50% since 2017.

  • Expanded Medicaid programs and new subsidies have made coverage more affordable.

Because of these gains, the ACA is politically difficult to dismantle—even in conservative states where residents benefit from funding and coverage.

Repeal Efforts

While some Republican leaders continue to call for ACA reform or repeal, there is no detailed replacement plan. Past repeal attempts have failed. Even states with Republican leadership often resist repeal because of the benefits the ACA provides to their residents.
