What is Form 1099-K?

IRS Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions, is used to report income from credit and debit card payments. It also applies to payments processed through third-party networks such as PayPal, Venmo, Stripe, and Square.

The form exists to make sure that businesses and self-employed individuals properly report taxable income. In other words, it helps the IRS track money received through online sales, gig work, and digital platforms.

Who Receives Form 1099-K?

Businesses and individuals receive Form 1099-K once they pass IRS thresholds. For example, a freelancer who is paid through PayPal or a small shop that accepts card payments may get the form when their totals reach the reporting limit.

Who Sends Form 1099-K?

Card processors such as Visa and Mastercard are required to issue the form when thresholds are exceeded. In addition, third-party networks like PayPal, Venmo, Stripe, and Square must send Form 1099-K to both the taxpayer and the IRS when reporting rules apply.

Purpose of Form 1099-K

The main purpose is to make sure that taxable income is reported accurately. Therefore, money earned from digital platforms, gig jobs, or online sales must be included in annual filings. This process improves compliance and reduces the risk of underreporting.

Filing Deadlines

Copy B must be provided to the recipient by January 31. The electronic filing deadline with the IRS is March 31. Finally, missing these deadlines can result in costly penalties, so timely filing is essential.
