Where can I get a blank 1099-MISC form for free?

There are lots of places where you can get blank, red-ink 1099 forms. I get my tax forms from my local library.  If they don’t have the forms on hand, just ask your librarian.  They can easily attain more and quickly.

Your local post office might have the red-ink forms on hand as well but I have never had success with my local post office.

You can order the forms are free by calling the IRS at 1-800-TAX-FORM or 1-800-829-3676.  The forms are free and shipping is free and you receive the forms within a few days. Don’t forget to order form 1096 which is the summary transmittal.

You can download the 1099-MISC form here

www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1099msc.pdf

But its important to remember that the online forms are for informational purposes only.  You can not use them to actually file a 1099 form.  The red-ink forms are scanned by the IRS.  Even if you could print the forms in a red-ink, the official forms use a special red-ink for scanning purposes.  The red-ink that your printer uses is not the same kind of red-ink that the IRS uses to create the 1099 forms.

I work at a public library, and most libraries no longer receive paper copies of tax forms from the government. We are able to print forms from the irs.gov website, but we no longer receive blank copies of the 1099 form.

I appreciate the comments. You cant print and use blank copies of the 1099 form. The IRS wont accept
printed forms. You have to find the red-ink forms and print on top of them or file electronically.

I have searched for the forms. I called the library and they said they wont have them until early February, even though the 1099s are due before 1/31. I called the post office and they said they no longer have any tax forms. So I went to the IRS office in Wilmington, DE and they did not have them either. I am now on the phone with the IRS. I am on hold waiting to talk to someone and it has already been 20 minutes. They finally answered and I ordered the form. The 1096s are backed up. The 1099s will take 0 business days…which is too late to be on time.

It seems negligent on the side of the IRS to not provide easy access to the forms or some other the means to stay within the law and make a good faith tax payment. It may be that they are in bad faith and look to get more money from the tax payers by setting them up for failure and levying fines and fees for late payments… all because they have a certain color of a form that they demand be used? This is absurd. It is the year 2020 in one of the most powerful nations in the world… why cant I print this out from my computer?

Copy B is due January 31. Copy A is only due on January 31 if you have
1099-MISC. The red-ink that the IRS uses is for scanning purposes. Its not
the same red-ink that you could purchase at Staples or Office Depot.

I know Copy A is also at any of the office supply places. They charge money
for Copy A but I know they have them.

You can always efile and that is something the IRS is encouraging
more and more. We can efile on your behalf or apply for an account with the
IRS and you can efile as well. Once you efile, you wont go back to paper filing.
