Import 1098-E

Each column has to be read in the correct sequence. The 1st column on your data identifies whether this information return is Void. The 2nd column has a value for Corrected and so forth following in the order below for the 1098-E:

Lender Federal identification number
Lender Type of TIN
Borrower Federal identification number
Borrower Type of TIN
Borrower Name
Borrower Address
Borrower City

Account Number
1098_E_1 // student loan interest received by lender
1098_E_2 // check if box 1 does not include loan origination fees and/or capitalized interest

Type of TIN is taken from the TIN itself. If the TIN contains one dash (-), then the TIN type is EIN. If the TIN contains two dashes, then the TIN type is an SSN. Otherwise the TIN is identified as unknown.
