Each column has to be read in the correct sequence. The 1st column identifies whether this information return is Amended. The 2nd column identifies if it is Prorata. The 3rd column is the Income Code, the 4th column is Gross Income and so forth following the order below for the 1042-S:

Type of TIN is taken from the TIN itself. If the TIN contains one dash (-), then the TIN type is EIN. If the TIN contains two dashes, then the TIN type is an SSN. Otherwise the TIN is identified as unknown.
